It has been 8 months since our new recycling program hit the streets. A major goal in making this change was to improve participation rates in recycling as well as our total recycling rate.
In the first month of the new program, WOW saw a 21% increase in the volume of material we collected curbside compared to the same month in 2007. To date 88% of eligible customers have our commingle carts. This is a huge increase over the 40-50% participation rate we saw with the old bin-style program.
So how is your city doing?
- Cannon Beach 86%
- Seaside 85%
- Gearhart 91%
- Astoria 88%
This is great news for our county and our environment.

What if my cart is not full every other week?
If it is less than half full don't worry about putting it out because you will be able to make it to your next service week.
Why is there not residential curbside glass service?
Glass can not be mixed with the other recyclables in the cart as it tends to break, contaminating the recyclable material, and therefore requiring separate handling and most likely a second truck. We know at least 85% of all the glass WOW recycles is collected from commercial businesses and drop-off depots, both of which are still available. By designing the program without glass, we are able to collect more recycling from more households in half the number of truck trips.
